To Be Entrusted

Picture
Padel Code
Beth* walked off the court before our game started, sat down by the chain-link fence, and sobbed.  Then she grabbed her gear and left the pickleball courts. Candace caught up with her and tried to comfort her.  While that was going on, Jimmy (who was going to be her partner) came over and explained what had transpired.  He commented to her that he did not enjoy playing with her in a previous game because she was too loud and excitable. Beth was already aware that her behavior might be too much for people, so Jimmy’s words increased her insecurity and hurt her feelings.

A Fabulous Debt

Picture
Our dogs can be obnoxious.  Whenever our next-door neighbor’s kids or dogs play in their backyard, Sig and Uzi run along the wooden fence barking with some dog-only-knows obsession. When birds fly overhead or geese land on the pond, they race the length of the yard yapping, trying to create a “no-fly zone.” Phil and Julie never complain. Graciously, they say the noise does not bother them and they like dogs so don’t worry about it.

Crafting Circles Not Cliques

Picture
Todd Foreman
My West Point classmate Todd Foreman is the most generous person I know in helping those around him, whether they be friends, coworkers, family, or those who are underprivileged, disabled, neglected, or hurting. Todd has a soft spot in his heart that is bigger than the state of Texas, where he resides. Sometimes, to his detriment, he puts the needs of others before his own needs in keeping with the Apostle Paul’s admonition, “Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3,4). Todd is a make-the-circle-bigger kind of leader.

Fallen Grapes

Picture
Meditation
Leviticus 19:10—You must not strip your vineyard bare or gather its fallen grapes. Leave them for the poor and the foreign resident; I am Yahweh your God.

Have you ever considered how God loves the poor, foreigners, and those lacking or hurting? He instructs the farmer not to harvest the land fully but to leave some of the gleanings for those without and hungry.  It’s a beautiful picture of our fantastic, caring Father.  Do you know any farmers who purposefully make part of their crop available for whoever might need it?

I Am Claiming God's Goodness

Picture
At the beginning of each year, I select a passage from Scripture to be my verse(s) for the year. This year, I picked Psalm 65:11.

When It Isn't Easy to Please

Picture
Have you ever run across someone who gets under your skin?  In other words, whether it is their tone, comments, or behavior, something about them is irritating, and that irascibility is continuous and annoying.  I met such a person playing pickleball.  In this case, an older man seems to feel that he needs to tutor everyone else on the court even though his skills are inferior.  He makes snarky comments, and I don’t like it. It gets to the point where when he signs up to play, others stay away because they don’t enjoy playing with him.  Unfortunately, he does not seem to take hints or suggestions. He is fixed in his mannerisms and perhaps does not care what others think. So, I have to admit I was not thrilled when I read Romans 15:1,2 this morning.

Thinking of You

Picture
When there is a death in the family, it is so encouraging to see people rally around and step up to provide support and comfort through meals, cards, flowers, phone calls, and just being present to listen, console, and encourage. The sting of death is not erased; the pain is real and sometimes overwhelming, but a caring community can and does make a difference.

Using Discernment

Picture
Ann faced a challenging situation in her new supervisory role with a nonprofit company that recently hired her.  One of the employees, Calista, who worked on a different team, was giving her a tough time.  Calista had applied for the job Ann now held and resented that she was not chosen.  She used Ann’s inexperience to belittle her on calls (shared by others in the organization) and was rude when speaking to her.  Ann realized she needed Calista’s help, but she first had to figure out a way to win her over, and that did not seem easy. So she asked for prayer from her close friends and asked God for His assistance.

Listening When We Don't Want To

Picture
Mike and Robbie boarded the light rail on their way to a Seattle Mariners game. A few feet from their seats sat a dirty, smelly man suffering from an addiction, mental health challenge, or both. Mike was repulsed and cautious toward this man conversing with an imaginary person. Mike noted, “He rearranged his clothing and belongings continuously and removed and replaced a fake mustache.” Mike prayed that he would not attack them or be a problem.  The Holy Spirit had another plan.  He whispered in Mike’s ear that this was a man with a name, a man loved by Him, and that Mike should approach and talk to him.  But that was not something Mike wanted to do, and for most of the train ride, he resisted listening to persistent promptings.

The Power of Care

Picture
Do you feel like a caring Creator guards your life, or are you feeling incredibly vulnerable and unsafe?  When we know Jesus, at least three important facts should kick into gear.  First, we understand from Psalm 139:16 that “Your [God’s] eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began.” There is nothing accidental about our lives—we were purposefully designed. Second, we know from John 3:16, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” Faith in Jesus brings us a redeemed life with God that will forever unfold. But we must understand a third critical fact to negotiate life joyfully.
