Sharing Hope

Picture
Yesterday I had the privilege of leading a former Navy veteran, Wanda* to Christ.  Her journey was pitted with pain, betrayal and enough hurt to stain a landfill.  But what was equally troublesome to me was when she shared that she had met many Christian counselors and self-described Christians in her pursuit for help and their singular advice was to read her Bible.  Certainly it is important to read God’s Word.  But when one is wallowing in confusion what is needed most is not a homework assignment—one needs the clarion gospel message.

I Wait For Your Salvation LORD

Picture
Meditation
Genesis 49:18—I wait for Your salvation LORD.

The Hebrew word yšû‘āh occurs 78 times in the Old Testament and means salvation (47); deliver, deliverer, deliverance (11); savior, saves, saving (10); victories, victorious, victory (8); rescue (1); and safety (1).  The word is only used once in the book of Genesis by Jacob when he pronounced on his deathbed what would happen to his twelve sons.  I’m not sure if his words referred to Dan who was the seventh son he was speaking to, or if they were a personal prayer before continuing his prophetic messages to his five remaining sons.  But if the latter case is true, then it would appear that Jacob possessed a belief in the afterlife.

The Power of Belief

PictureTalisa
My son Bryan was invited to share his story at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He was one of two featured speakers on a night when almost every participant in the room shared some kind of disability.  Disabilities included Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), asthma, depression, cancer, arthritis, etc.  Each person was asked to write a poem about their challenges and to highlight what was bad as well as what was good.  Then, throughout the evening, volunteers could come to the front of the room and share what they wrote.

They Did Not Believe It

Meditation
Mark 16:10-13—She went and reported to those who had been with Him, as they were mourning and weeping.  Yet, when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it. Then after this, He appeared in a different form to two of them walking on their way into the country.  And they went and reported it to the rest, who did not believe them either.

The Pure Word

Jadon is almost 21 months old and being his grandpa is one of life’s great blessings.  Jadon’s first word was “ball.”  Virtually as soon as he learned how to walk he began kicking balls.  He will walk and run around the room for quite awhile either throwing or kicking soccer balls, footballs, tennis balls (well you get the idea) and it is amazing to see his coordination.  Jadon’s first phrase was “I love you” which he learned from Mark and Sarah. But his first connection of two different words was “more food.”  Mentally he figured it out that more combined with food communicated that he was still hungry.

Kostyantyn

There is natural reason for Ukrainians to dread Russia taking over their country again—oppression under communism was intense and costly.  Ukrainian Kostyantyn spent many years in a Soviet labor camp.  The authorities disliked his actions as an elder in his church so they sent him to be re-educated.  Over 200 pastors were also sent to the same camp.

Branches of the Vine

Meditation
John 15:5-I am the vine; you are the branches.  The one who remains in Me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without Me.

Thinking

It is my goal to read 24 books each year.  Part of this discipline involves choosing books that cover a wide range of subjects.  There is no end to the number of good books one can read.  Scientists tell us we use so little of our brain.  I discovered how little my brain was when I journeyed into the realm of Probability and her cousins Electrical Engineering and Thermal Dynamics.  But I also learned how much greater my mind could be stretched than I would have dared imagine.  It is better to be challenged in what is difficult than to be difficult about being challenged.
