Self-Righteous

Picture
Meditation
Deuteronomy 9:5,6--You are not going to take possession of their land because of your righteousness or your integrity. Instead, the Lord your God will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness, in order to keep the promise He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  Understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.

Not to Do Dumb Stuff

Picture
Pastor Brian led the children in a short message at Agape Church. One of his questions for the kids was if they had any New Year’s Resolutions. Several girls and boys shared before one young boy raised his hand and said his New Year’s Resolution was “Not to do dumb stuff.” That elicited quite a chuckle amongst the adults.
Inspired by the young boy’s answer, I called and asked my West Point classmate, Randy, what the dumbest thing he could think of that he’d ever done. It did not take him long to answer. “I got a car, a California customized van, as a Cadet, before it was authorized. I kept it parked off campus but decided to drive it around school one day before graduation.”  Unfortunately, someone reported him, and he became a Century Man. This meant that on top of the hours he had already walked for other infractions with his rifle across a cement apron, he would surpass 100 hours of marching.

Debating

Picture
Meditation
Jude 9--Yet Michael the archangel, when he was disputing with the Devil in a debate about Moses’ body, did not dare bring an abusive condemnation against him but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

Frivolous

Picture
My West Point classmate Larry Turrentine recently shared this wisdom with our weekly prayer team:
A week ago, I passed through Detroit's Metro Airport after attending a funeral and a repass. As I walked through, I spotted a curious name for a shop. It was called "Frivolous," with a subtitle "wonderfully necessary." Clearly, it was designed for those with extra time and extra money. It fit the former. So, with my extra time, I went in and looked around.
Nothing really caught my interest, and moments later, I was gone. It occurred to me that my experience was a microcosm of a Christian Pilgrim's progress through life. Why do many of us spend significant amounts of time in the shops of our lives called "Frivolous"? If it is true that only what we do for Christ will last, why do trivial pursuits (frivolity) fritter away our lives? If the airport were on fire, would we patronize the shop called "Frivolous"?
We are the ecclesia, the called-out ones, and our call is to be Ambassadors to a lost and dying world, to a world on fire. Our call is purity and holiness. But as long as the shop called "Frivolous" exists, so must our mandate to pray.

Pretending

Picture
Alice* presented her plan for her organization to succeed if certain political events went differently than expected.  Sadly, her presentation failed because she neglected to vet it with her peers, and her message needed to be clearer. It caused subordinates to question how in touch their senior leaders were with them.

One of the junior supervisors, Becky, wept as she shared her frustration with senior leadership’s inability to appreciate their needs. Her vulnerability encouraged many in the room to speak up with similar thoughts, and the atmosphere in the room became tense and somewhat awkward. Feeling overwhelmed, Becky left the meeting.

Blind Faith

Picture
Johnny* bought a car, a really nice new shiny red car.  His wife counseled him not to make the purchase.  His financial advisor warned him it could put him in unsustainable debt.  But Johnny didn’t care to listen.  This car was going to make up for all the “beater,” used, ordinary cars he was tired of driving. It would let everyone know he was doing well—after all he served the King and those who serve the King deserve the best. Right?!

Ordained

Picture
Klaus Schwab, a German engineer, founded the World Economic Forum (WEF) on January 24, 1971.[1] About 1000 companies fund this international non-governmental lobbying organization. They are somewhat famous for their annual meeting in Davos, a mountain resort in Switzerland. It is a dangerous organization committed to an ideology that the globalized world should be managed by a “self-selected coalition of multinational corporations, governments and civil society organizations (CSOs)” through initiatives like the “Great Reset” or the “Global Redesign.” They are not transparent with their finances. Nor are they shy about advocating pandemic lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and a strong collectivist ideology that scorns individual sovereignty and advocates eliminating many citizen rights to enforce their enlightened views.[2] Schwab and his cronies are openly hostile towards Christianity and are not shy about espousing a utopian, depopulated earth where they rule and control in godlike fashion.[3]

Finding Stasis

Picture
Meditation
Daniel 5:26-28--This is the interpretation of the message: MENE means that God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end. TEKEL means that you have been weighed in the balance and found deficient.PERES means that your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

Apathy

Picture
Jimmy Buffett once said, “Is it ignorance or apathy? Hey, I don't know and I don't care.”  In one sentence he precisely illustrated the great sin of apathy.   Bodie Thoene noted that “Apathy is the glove into which evil slips its hand.”  Any person with passion and purpose understands what a threat it is to be surrounded or partnered with those of an indifferent ilk.

Foolishness Uncovered

Pastor Justin and his two sons drove from Alabama to spend a weekend at my home. It was a rich time in fellowship with our brother from Congo who is working hard to find as many ways as possible to help bring the gospel and better living conditions to his countrymen in eastern DRC.  When Justin conversed with his sons, Moses and Junior, in Swahili, I could not understand what they were saying.  In reading Paul’s words to the Corinthian believers below, it occurred to me that for those who do not accept Jesus, listening to His words truly sounds like a foreign language.

With Ropes of Love

Meditation
Hosea 11:3,4—It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them in My arms, but they never knew that I healed them.  I led them with human cords, with ropes of love.  To them I was like one who eases the yoke from their jaws; I bent down to give them food.

Illogical

Have you ever wondered how astronauts fly up into space to rendezvous with a space station or other orbiting objects such as the Hubble space telescope?  It is an incredibly difficult task.  Let’s listen in to scientist Palmer Bailey as he articulates the challenge:
"The basic problem is that both of the rendezvousing objects are in individual orbits around the Earth.  The shape and size of a spacecraft’s orbit is determined by its velocity.  Thus if you try to speed up to catch something travelling ahead of you in the same orbit, you change your orbit and then are no longer in the same orbit . . . Therefore, if you are in orbit behind your rendezvous target and try to speed up to catch it, what actually happens is that your increased speed is used up raising you into a higher and therefore slower orbit and you fall farther and farther behind.  You must slow down, thus dropping into a lower but quicker orbit until you are ahead of your target, then speed up at just the right rate to go into the higher slower orbit as the target craft catches up to you.  It’s pretty tricky to get that timing just right."

Promiscuous

One of the reasons I love to study the Bible is the amazing way God speaks to the times in which we live.  Read what the prophet Hosea wrote to his countrymen sometime between 755 and 722 B.C. and see if his words speak to your nation.

Fog

“There is no sun,” the people cried. “Don’t talk to us about sun. Every day it is the same.   We can see only so far in front, so far above and that’s the way it is.   Life is a mist, soak it up.  What we see is far more important than what we don’t see.  What we believe is beyond us is of no consequence to what we experience. We do what we want to do and we want to be left alone.  When we die we die and so it is better to live for whatever makes us happy.

Nation

Once upon a time a young man, Foye, crossed the ocean to explore Vacuities the world’s most powerful nation.  Everywhere he went he met a myriad of people moving from city to city, looking for meaning.  Inside a harbor graced by a noble statue, he first encountered the City of Results. But for all the accomplishments the city boasted he constantly met people disappointed that their goals brought no lasting satisfaction.  It was like they worked and worked, but for what?  Traveling inland, he spent time in the City of Retirement—a most sought after destination. Yet, here he discovered that there was little to live for among those entranced with ease, so most just died.

Signs and Wisdom

My son, Bryan and I were driving down a steep road when we encountered a peculiar sign. It said, “Caution—Hill Obscures View”.  Well duh!  We laughed at the great wisdom displayed!  Maybe it’s the way my brain works, but that set me to thinking about signs and miracles.  Does it seem like people are unimpressed with the obvious and bore easily today in an age where technology renders the sufficient obsolete?

Innocence

My parents were missionaries which meant that we didn’t often see members of our extended family.  One year we took a trip to Washington and stayed with Grandma and Grandpa Erickson.  My cousins happened also to be there and we spent great time playing together and competing.  Loren and I, as the oldest, got to stay in Grandpa’s Winnebago parked just outside their home.  One night Loren decided to teach me a game I’d never played—strip poker.

Controllers

Sam walked from the studio into the sanctuary.  The amplifier levels were set incorrectly and the sound in the room from the instruments was unbalanced.  So he adjusted the levels on the soundboard and moved the amp volumes up to full power.  He removed the old paper arrows taped to the board assigning each channel a specific level. Now the system sounded great.  Sam was pleased he had helped the church.

Driving Highway 101 from Fort Hunter Liggett to San Jose, I experienced an epiphany. Whoa was it a boat rocker!  It came via a clever California license plate in front of me--WIZDUMB.  It caused me to reflect on the two kinds of wisdom that exist.

Prejudice

Meditation
Matthew 5:43-45--You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
