No Choice in the Matter

Picture
David & Teresa
Around 2010, David was having his quiet time on his outside patio when the Lord said, “I want you to give me everything.”  He responded, “Lord, You have everything . . . we served You on the mission field . . . ” The Holy Spirit then impressed on his heart, “I want everything in your bank accounts.” David’s heart broke, and he began weeping.  Then he conceded, “Lord, it’s all yours.” He went to his wife, Teresa, and shared what had happened.  She replied that before emptying their bank accounts, she wanted confirmation. After two days of prayer, Teresa heard from God and agreed with her husband.  They emptied all their accounts and wrote a check to Eternal Perspectives Ministries.  David told me, “It was fun to write that check but very scary.”  About two years later, God directed them to move from Indiana to Oregon. Without funding or a job but full of faith, they obeyed.  For six months, with two of their children and a dog, they slept on couches in friends’ homes until the time came when God blessed them with provisions to have their own place and ministry.

As Usual

Picture
Mary Geegh is one of my heroes. She wrote a fascinating booklet called God Guides. Mary wrote, “I determined to listen to God for guidance in all matters, and I promised Him I would obey whatever He told me.”  Mary had a critical spirit towards a coworker, so, in line with her new conviction, she asked God’s guidance on how to repair the rift between them. God told her to give her colleague a fresh egg. Mary thought that would insult her and resisted God’s prompting. But later, with prodding, she did what God asked, and He used that egg to refresh the woman and to bring new love into Mary’s heart for her—all the friction was gone! Mary created a habit that would change her life and give her countless stories of God miraculously working in her and through her for His Kingdom.

The Return

Picture
Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, “It behooves us then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.” On April 30, 1863, Lincoln's National Day of Humiliation, Fasting and Prayer was observed.  Two days later, Lt. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson was mortally wounded in a freak accident where he was shot by his own troops.  The loss of this powerful Confederate leader changed the course of the war.[1]

By What Authority?

Picture
In the week leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, He first made His authority clear to a young, unbroken donkey which He triumphantly rode into Jerusalem.  His ride stirred a quick-gathering crowd that placed their robes on the road and spread leafy branches in front of the One they hoped would be their King. Matthew wrote, “The whole city was shaken, saying, “Who is this?” (Mathew 21:10).

Surrender

They call themselves Christians and they are the most peculiar of people.  They embrace relinquishing their right to themselves to serve the will of some invisible God.  They bow their heads respectfully in what they call prayer to send their words through a blank sky to some cosmic location called heaven believing their Creator-Father hears them.

Vindication

Jesus was the apotheosis of courage.  Imagine being perfect yet choosing to ignore the false charges of corrupt accusers! Jesus let His character be assassinated without defending Himself.  He accepted His own murder without the need to exact revenge. Instead, He entrusted Himself to His Father's hands--to be publicly humiliated by the very people He came to save.  If anyone had the right to call down forces from heaven it was Christ.  By thought alone He could have called out legions of angels.  They didn't have to pack duffel bags or get Anthrax shots before deploying!  No force on earth could have stopped them.  Yet, the Son of Man submitted to God's will. The Holy Spirit would come after to vindicate Him.  The pierced One rose to eternal glory.

Reality

Uncontrolled zeal is fanaticism—a condition never endorsed in the Bible.  Unfulfilled verbiage is hype—a first cousin to hypocrite. We become unreal when we have all the right answers but neglect application.  Most people quickly learn to spot smoke devoid of fire.

Ideals

Meditation
Genesis 2:16,17--And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.
