1 & 2 Kings: Inauguration

Picture
It might seem strange to start the year with a devotional on 1 & 2 Kings but it actually is quite appropriate.  In this new year a president-elect is soon to be inaugurated. Somewhere around 1010 B.C., David, arguably the nation of Israel’s greatest king, just before he died passed great wisdom to his son Solomon. His words if heeded by any newly elected leader or monarch in modern times would make a significant difference.

Don't Be Exploited

Picture
Alicia listened with rapt attention as Brother Berrie* encouraged his listeners to send as large a gift as possible to his ministry.  She was amazed at the number of people healed by Berrie’s touch and their stirring testimonies.  He was a magnificent speaker and she was certain he carried the blessing of heaven. Berrie told his listeners that by giving to him they would ensure themselves health—no sickness would overcome them. He said that God personally told him that the larger the gift his donors sent him guaranteed them a higher rewarded position in the afterlife because of the impact of his ministry.  Though she was barely managing to keep her home together as a single mom, Alicia eagerly went online and gave $150 hard-earned dollars.

Understanding Language and Literature

Picture
British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in a speech given in 1988 said:
We are a nation whose ideals were founded on the Bible.  Also it is quite impossible to understand our literature without grasping this fact. That is the strong practical case for ensuring that children at school are given adequate instruction in the part which the Judaeo-Christian tradition has played in moulding our laws, manners and institutions.[1]

Understanding History

Picture
Mike Courts purchased two books and sent them to me, The Book That Made Your World and This Book Changed Everything, both by Vishal Mangalwadi.  I’m more than half-way through the first book and am thrilled by the research, clear logic and superb writing by Vishal in establishing how the Bible created the soul of western civilization.   It is a potent testimony to why it is critical that we accurately understand history.  Furthermore, it gives a warning shout to what is happening today by liberals and radicals engaged in a concerted effort to revise and rewrite history to their own liking and agenda so as to undermine our nation’s constitution and way of governance founded on Biblical principles.

Meditation
Ezra 4:19,20--I issued an order and a search was made, and it was found that this city has a long history of revolt against kings and has been a place of rebellion and sedition.  Jerusalem has had powerful kings ruling over the whole of Trans-Euphrates, and taxes, tribute and duty were paid to them. (NIV)

The word history, used in both Ezra 4:15 and 4:19, is translated by the combination of three Hebrew words, yôm, min, and ālam which when combined mean long history. The people who inhabited Israel during Judah’s time of exile, were not happy with the resettling of Jews and their rebuilding Jerusalem.  Therefore they sent a letter to King Artaxerxes from the “region west of the Euphrates River” (4:11), warning him of Jerusalem’s history of sedition hoping that he would issue a cease and desist order.  The king decreed that a search be conducted and, after hearing the city’s history, ordered that the rebuilding should stop until he issued a further decree.  It was a discouraging blow to the Jews that fortunately was overturned later by King Darius (6:8-12).

I cite this passage to show that even those who resist God understand the value of understanding history and to their credit at least were honest in applying it.  If we don’t know our true past or the role of the Bible in shaping who we are today and teach it to our children, we are doomed to fall to the ideology of those who reshape education and define values.  It would seem that very few people invest the time to truly research and understand history as Mr. Mangalwadi does.  Ironically, his book is dedicated to the “Honourable Arun Shourie, member of Parliament and Former Minister to the Government of India for his criticisms of the Bible which prompted Mangalwadi’s search for truth and the writing of his book.

If history matters, clearly understanding history really matters!  Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of his day for not knowing and for not correctly understanding Scripture (Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:24) as it related historically to Him and to God’s plan.  Our challenge is to know God’s Word and to understand it’s power yesterday and relevance today.  If we fail in this we lose the ability to shape tomorrow.  May we say with the Psalmist, “I consider days of old, years long past” (Psalm 77:5).  The Apostle Paul advised, “For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures” (Romans 15:4).

Inspiration
The people are the ultimate guardians of their own liberty. History, by apprising them of the past, will enable them to judge of the future. It will avail them of the experience of other times and other nations; it will qualify them as judges of the actions and designs of men.—Thomas Jefferson

Judges

Israel experienced the death of their famous leader Joshua still facing the enormous task of conquering Canaan.  The book of Judges follows up where the book of Joshua left off, with the challenge of expelling wicked nations in territory God assigned for His people in a period that spans three centuries.

Joshua

Picture
Meditation
Joshua 14:10-12—"As you see, the Lord has kept me alive these 45 years as He promised, since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel was journeying in the wilderness. Here I am today, 85 years old.  I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me out. My strength for battle and for daily tasks is now as it was then. Now give me this hill country the Lord promised me on that day, because you heard then that the Anakim are there, as well as large fortified cities. Perhaps the Lord will be with me and I will drive them out as the Lord promised.”

Deuteronomy

Picture
Deuteronomy is a “must read” for any serious student of the Bible.  That it is one of the most significant books of the Old Testament is evidenced by at least 28 quotations by Christ and various authors of the New Testament.[1]  Jesus quoted from this book three times to refute Satan’s temptations when He was led out into the desert for forty days without food (Matthew 4:1-11; Deu. 6:13, 16; 8:3). Once when asked by a Pharisee what the greatest commandment in the law was, Jesus quoted Deu. 6:5, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”

Leviticus

Picture
If you asked many Christians why they have not read through the entire Bible the answer might be “Leviticus.”  The third book in the Bible is difficult to read through because it is mainly comprised of laws, religious offerings and sacrifices, and health instructions.  Ironically this was the first book studied by a Jewish child.[1]

Genesis

Picture
Walt Henrichsen, a godly man now in heaven, once said, “For the Christian, the only reliable revelation of God is the Bible.”  Reading the Bible is a great adventure in the pursuit of wisdom.  And the first book, Genesis, is incredibly important.  If we study Genesis we learn amazing truths and this initial book helps explain the following 65 books.  Why is Genesis so important?

Time and Chance

Picture
It is the last day of the decade and a gazillion thoughts cascade through my mind:
  • What did I learn the last ten years that brought growth and will help me be a better leader?
  • What mistakes did I make that I dare not repeat?
  • What were the significant milestones, blessings and joy-makers?
  • Did suffering and setbacks shape me to be even more in love with God than ever before?
  • Does technology seem out of control? People spend so much time on their smart phones and devices that healthy social interaction is seriously diseased.

Strap on Our Sword

Picture
Pastor Rusty Hayes is preaching a series on “Uphill Habits.”  On Sunday he spoke on “What We Think.”  The habit he asked us to address is the need to control our thoughts, because: we are not just what we eat; we are what we think; everything begins with a thought; what we think determines how we feel; and, our thoughts determine our destiny.  In order to master this habit, we need to find a plan to control our thoughts, a safe place to think, a person to stretch our thinking, a purpose to land our thoughts and a power to fuel what we think.

Power of the Word

John George graduated into heaven recently.  He was a man for whom I will eternally be grateful.  At a time when I was a cocky senior at West Point, he accurately confronted me about pride and forever changed my life.  John knew that the Bible warns us in Proverbs 16:18 that “Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.”  His exhortation scared me to death that God would not use me for His kingdom.

Read It Every Day

Forty-four men wrote over a period of sixteen centuries sixty-six books that display coherent unity and progressive revelation from Genesis to Revelation.[1] The Bible reveals God’s redemption plan for humanity. It offers the best leadership, marriage, child-raising, family-relations, financial, conduct, attitude, character, teamwork, physical, spiritual, emotional and wisdom-producing advice and instruction on the planet. Yet, I believe we would be shocked, if we knew how many Jesus-followers have never read through this supreme gift from God.

The Right Kind of Knowledge

Meditation
Colossians 1:9,10—For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven’t stopped praying for you.  We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God.

A Gentle Answer

You could hear them screaming at each other five offices away.  Heads poked out to see what was going on—I was afraid words would escalate to blows, but fortunately that did not happen.   Don looked like he was going to have a heart attack, his face was beet red and he was shaking.  Rich’s jaw was clenched and his palms rolled into fists but with three of us coaxing we managed to get them separated and back into their own offices.

I asked Rich what happened.  He said he went into Don’s office to ask how Allie was doing on the project she was working with him.  Don told him she was worthless and to get out of his office, he was sick of taking Rich’s broken employees and felt like Rich deliberately was out to make his life miserable.  Rich said the way Don spoke penetrated his brain and hit his anger button.  He knew Allie had her weak areas but he was proud of her hard work and resented Don’s judgmental attitude.  Furthermore he didn’t appreciate the way the older manager always blamed people instead of trying to get along.  So instead of finding a response to deescalate the tension, he spoke the first thought that raced across his brain, “Don you are a loser and I’m sick of trying to help you.”  Those words brought Don out of his chair and began a two-minute shouting match.

The Pure Word

Jadon is almost 21 months old and being his grandpa is one of life’s great blessings.  Jadon’s first word was “ball.”  Virtually as soon as he learned how to walk he began kicking balls.  He will walk and run around the room for quite awhile either throwing or kicking soccer balls, footballs, tennis balls (well you get the idea) and it is amazing to see his coordination.  Jadon’s first phrase was “I love you” which he learned from Mark and Sarah. But his first connection of two different words was “more food.”  Mentally he figured it out that more combined with food communicated that he was still hungry.

Endurance and Encouragement

A runner sees endurance as vital to finishing a race; a parent sees endurance as the ability to shepherd a child to adulthood.  Endurance originates from the compound Greek word: hupo (under) + meno (to remain) to give us the concept continuing under pressure.[1] It is much more than a physical resolve, it is a mental resolve.  Without sufficient why, the what loses meaning and we are more prone to quit.

Dunamis

When we arrive in heaven will there be a Hall of Fame? Will we find an interactive display manned by select angels who share the stories of those living legends who served God exceedingly well?  Conversely, will there be a Hall of Shame in hell for those who acted in the power of Satan? If Hitler was one of the worst men to walk the planet we might also find that his countryman Dietrich Bonhoefferwas an exceptional saint.  This German Lutheran pastor and theologian could have successfully pastored in the United States or in Great Britain.  Instead, he chose to go back to his country and preach and teach knowing that his life was in jeopardy.
