The Source of Peace

Picture
When I conducted a search for the “10 most stressful events” on the internet, the first two sources listed moving as #7.[1] I remember learning from a sociology class at West Point that moving was a big stressor.  It does make sense.  Moving is largely comprised of change, and the transitions change demand can be cortisol-producing. Imagine driving a packed 26-foot U-Haul truck from Colorado to Virginia and encountering drivers who seem clueless that one cannot slam on the brakes and immediately stop a fully-loaded truck! My physics professors would be proud of that observation. (May the woman who impatiently darted in front of me in Tennessee please learn that lesson). I’m also pretty sure my wife more than maxed her stress points trying to follow me in the Subaru as I wove between trucks on I-40. Despite all the miles, we made it accident-free and in pretty good shape. No animals were harmed, only one old piece of furniture was damaged, and, thanks to Covid, we had no problems finding hotel rooms.

Numbers

Picture
The fourth book of the Bible is Numbers which is a translation of Arithmoi, from the Septuagint.  It is titled as such because the book contains two census counts, numerous statistics, tribal and priestly figures, and other numerical data.  The Hebrew name is included in the first sentence of the book and means “in the desert of ”; an accurate description of the book’s content, which follows the Israelites through almost forty years of desert wandering.[1]
The story began in the second year of the Israelites escape from Egypt, as they camped in the Wilderness of Sinai around 1444 BC.  It ends 38 years later “in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho” (36:13) in 1406 BC.[2]

Packing

It would be interesting to know how many hours I have spent in my life packing before a trip.  Even this morning my time is measured by getting my bags ready for another journey.  In 2013 I traveled to over 50 cities, 21 states, one foreign nation and 3 islands.  This year is more of the same. The key before every journey is making sure I am well prepared.

Doors

Sandra, the leader of Jennifer’s home Bible Study, informed the women of her job promotion with Key Bank.   As a result, she would be moving to another state.  While the women cheered her good fortune, immediately they wondered what would happen to their group when she left.   At first, there was quite a bit of discouragement.  Jennifer was personally going through a rough time in her life as a parent and Sandra’s advice was often invaluable and encouraging.

Moving

I’ve moved so many times in my life that I’ve never had to reorder business cards. But moves are trickier these days. First, I wonder if my knee is going to give out while I’m carrying the desk down the stairs.  Second, it seems like furniture keeps getting heavier. Third, I thought I was doing a good job downsizing, so how in the world did we get so much stuff?  Ah, but it’s all good.  Moving is an opportunity to start afresh, to trust God around new bends and to meet new people.  Fortunately, this office move was less than a mile away.
