The Problem with Religion

Did you know that God is offended by meaningless, false-hearted chanting?

A Faith of Equal Privilege

Picture
The antidote to discrimination and racism is Jesus Christ. Pastor E.V. Hill once shared his response to Black Panthers threatening his life for preaching about “that white Jesus.”
I don’t know anything about a white Christ—I know about Christ, a Savior named Jesus. I don’t know what color He is. He was born in brown Asia, He fled to black Africa, and He was in heaven before the gospel got to white Europe . . . I do know one thing: if you bow at the altar with color on your mind, and get up with color on your mind, go back again and keep going back until you no longer look at His color, but at his greatness and His power—His power to save![1]

Fire

Picture
When was the last time you sat beside a fire, alone, and able to think and meditate? The previous home owners left me a gift of numerous piles of dead branches all over the property. I guess they didn’t have time to burn anything but I still would label their actions a gift because they gave me plenty of reason to clear away brush piles and, in the process, burn.  There is something mesmerizing (and therapeutic) about sitting next to a fire and watching it reduce large masses to smoldering ashes. No branch escapes. All that feel the hot fury of flame are engulfed and reduced to residue.

Virtue Above Values

Picture
Dr. Gary Bredfeldt, author of Great Leader, Great Teacher, has some poignant observations to share about the character of leaders.[1] He notes that values are valuable as principles, qualities or standards. Values represent leader beliefs that come from heartfelt commitment—that indicate emotional investment. They can be morally neutral and subjective and, as society increasingly becomes relativistic, values (which are not moral absolutes) gain greater favor. Values can be personalized and tied to race, gender or class.

I Identify As . . .

Picture
While at a golf fundraising event I saw a marine veteran wearing a t-shirt that proclaimed, “I Identify As Vaccinated.” It radiated humor but was actually rather brilliant. It subtly broadcast with absurdity the politically-correct notion that someone can identify as whatever gender they desire. As the federal government moves to require schools to accommodate transgender students not surprisingly there is an immediate push back. College of the Ozarks is suing President Joe Biden because his executive order on “gender identity” violates the school’s religious freedom by compelling it to force their students to share dorms and shower facilities with members of the opposite sex.[1] So let’s take a closer, deeper look at the whole issue of identity.

Suubi House

Picture
West Point classmate Bill Bowman shared his story with the Long Eternal Line team who gather each Tuesday night for prayer. Bill suffered a bad car accident that crushed his back and should have left him permanently paralyzed.  While in the hospital Bill shared how Jesus held him and comforted him.  Bill apologized for not walking the right path and the Lord shared with him that his story was not over yet.  Miraculously, Bill and his wife were able to have a baby girl they named Sarah.  Bill nicknamed her Suubi—a name that stuck.

Preserving Unity

Johnny's Christmas

Picture
Silently a small figure sat shivering on the soft pine-covered earth tucked away from the wind in a grove of blue spruce.  His tear-filled eyes gazed out across a small meadow where remnants of snow from the last storm lingered. He opened his knapsack and took out the curved white candle and remembered the last words of his frail mother.  “Johnny, I love you so much.  I’m proud of you.  I want you to take this candle and keep it and remember—you are to be a light.  No matter what happens, you keep shining?  Promise?”

Proper Authority

Meditation
1 Timothy 1:3,5—As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, continue to remain at Ephesus so that you might command some to teach no other doctrine . . . Now the goal of this command is love from a pure heart, and from a good conscience, and from sincere faith. (Modern English Version)

The word, “command” in verses three and five is a military term which means “to give strict orders.”

More Willpower

Meditation
2 John 6—And this is love: that we walk according to His commands. This is the command as you have heard it from the beginning: you must walk in love.

The first Biblical reference to love God is recorded in Exodus 20:6. Moses teaches the Israelites to keep God’s commands and thereby demonstrate their love for Him.  So, when John defines love in his letter to his readers, he is not sharing with them a new concept.  But, as we all know, it is hard to walk in love with God.  How do we strengthen willpower to be better God-lovers and, in the process, improve loving others and ourselves?

Making a Difference

Meditation
Zechariah 7:9—“The LORD of Hosts says this: Make fair decisions.  Show faithful love and compassion to one another.”

It is cold outside—twelve degrees above zero.  Snow is on the ground and from inside my office window it looks beautiful.  It’s a matter of perspective.  December can be a wonderful time of warmth for many people; a chance to be with family, to take a break from work and to enjoy each other’s company.  But I could equally write that this month is a frozen, depressing period for many people; the reminder that loved ones are gone, unemployment a reality, and a feeling that few care or understand.

Katchi Kapshida (We Go Together)

For over sixty years the United States and the Republic of Korea have maintained a military alliance against the forces of North Korea.  The slogan that best captures this friendship and commitment is “katchi kapshida” which literally means “we go together.”  On June 25, 1950 North Korea launched an offensive with the purpose of uniting the peninsula by force in order to create a communist state.  Over 54,000 Americans gave their lives defending the south until finally an armistice was signed on July 27, 1953.[1]  My dad was one of the Marines who was wounded and decorated for his heroism during that war. North Korea never signed a peace treaty so technically both the south and north are still at war.  Today, an uneasy truce exists along the 2.5 mile wideand 160 miles long demilitarized zone (DMZ).[2]Many believe it is only the bond between the U.S. and South Korea that keeps the North from attacking.

If You See the Donkey

Meditation
Exodus 23:5—If you see the donkey of someone who hates you lying helpless under its load, and you want to refrain from helping it, you must help with it.

If I see that my enemy, Joe, is in trouble, my natural reaction is to think, “He is getting what he deserves for his poor behavior and attitude!” and to walk past him without providing assistance.  Basically Joe’s misfortune is deserved because of past, poor behavior and I should not interfere with his karma.[1]

Kindness Saved the Harlot

It was truly an implausible act.  She lived behind fortified walls yet chose to be vulnerable. For a woman of the street she possessed great insight.  She knew that her city would be destroyed because she believed the reports of the Destroyer.  As new stories meandered along hot, dusty streets and through bustling merchant shops, hearts despaired and courage disappeared.  She saw things differently; embracing faith from a heaven and earthperspective.

Why did the spies go to her house?  She could easily have reported them.  Even the king knew they visited her and dispatched messengers who told her to bring them out for arrest.  No, she knew a lot about men, and these two were different. So she hid them on her roof and lied about them leaving the city.  Later under the cover of darkness she gave them a rope so they could escape down her wall.  She was an audacious woman with a simple request.

I Would Take a Bullet for Her

Trenton’s wisdom is deep for such a young boy.  In describing his love for Lindsay, his sister, Trenton shared, “I would take a bullet for her.”  As he regained his composure after getting choked up, he added “She’s my best friend. I would do anything for her.  My life would be nothing without her.” These are not trite statements they emanate from his heart.

Lindsay has spinal muscular atrophy yet from her motorized chair she beams when she describes her older brother.  His example of love if followed would change the world!   Watch their story at http://omeleto.com/213180/ and make sure to have Kleenex handy!

He Made the Right Choice

George really loves his three sons and he also really loves scouting.  As a teenager he significantly grew through his scouting experience and remembers the pride on his father’s face when he made Eagle Scout.  If circumstances were different he would still be a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts.  When his oldest son, Hal, was in the scouts, George invested time in him so he was able to compete and do well against older boys.  But Hal got to a place where he didn’t enjoy scouting and wanted out.  He shared with his mom Shannon his desire to quit and she felt the stress of wanting to help him while knowing how passionate George was about his sons becoming Eagle Scouts.

Build Me a Grandson

My mother wrote a prayer for me called “Build Me a Son.”  It is a prayer that still inspires me and one that God honors.  On July 12,2013, our grandson Jadon celebrated his first birthday.  Kathleen and I are grateful that our children love God and that our daughter Sarah and son-in-law Mark will share His love with their son.  While the family gathered in Bend to celebrate this milestone, I missed Jadon’s birthday because of Army duty.   Ironically, I am in the place where I was born, Colorado Springs.  So by the Rocky Mountains I reach to heaven with this new prayer of blessing.

Spiritual Worship

What Christian is not frustrated in trying to live a godly life?  Why is it so hard?  For starters, we are flawed.  We enter the world dripping wet with a sin nature and from the very outset need God’s grace.  A baby’s temper tantrum was not learned behavior it was already ingrained.  We grow up enamored with the world’s offerings—what man is not drawn to lust after a sensual woman or woman drawn to the need for security?  We are stubborn, preferring to do what we want.  It is completely counter-culture to pursue holiness.  There is nothing easy about achieving purity and we are quickly frustrated by adversity, failure, and the clever attacks of Satan who will do all he can to disrupt us from fellowship with God.

Urgency

In his book Younger Next Year cowritten with Chris Crowley, Dr. Henry Lodge states that “Over 50% of all illness and injuries in the last third of your life can be eliminated by changing your lifestyle in the way we suggest.”[1]   The major way they suggest is to exercise forty-five minutes a day six days a week. Four of those workouts are aerobic and two involve weight training.  The reason most people grow weak and more susceptible to disease is directly attributed to their failure to exercise!

The Right Use of Knowledge

Knowledge is the gateway to freedom. But my freedom may cause another to become shackled. When this happens, the fragrance that once surrounded my thinking becomes a stench before God. Let me give a hypothetical cultural example. From Scripture, I learn that I am to love people. In American culture, it is common and acceptable in most situations for a man to hug a woman. Let us say I travel to India where such action is frowned upon. Because of my knowledge of Scripture and my own culture, I have no problem hugging an Indian woman in the presence of my Indian brothers because I am free to express love with no sense of guilt or temptation. Now two things have occurred.
