Remember the 15s

Picture
First called Decoration Day, Memorial Day was nationally observed on May 30, 1868, to honor Union soldiers who lost their lives in the Civil War.[1] In 1873, New York officially recognized this day as a holiday, and by 1890, every other state had joined them. After two world wars, the day became an official time for remembering and mourning all service members who died while serving their country.

Life

Picture
Satan shrewdly deceived Eve in the garden. Just eat the forbidden fruit and you will be like God and know the difference between good and evil (Genesis 3:5). The deeper implication behind his temptation was that Eve was somehow deprived.  At this point in her existence, she had no knowledge of evil. What Satan did not tell Eve was that it was her relationship with God that was most important. Having her eyes opened would make her like him—a fallen creature out of God’s favor. His intent was to sever Adam and Eve’s relationship with their Creator by cunningly convincing them to disobey His command.

A Faith of Equal Privilege

Picture
The antidote to discrimination and racism is Jesus Christ. Pastor E.V. Hill once shared his response to Black Panthers threatening his life for preaching about “that white Jesus.”
I don’t know anything about a white Christ—I know about Christ, a Savior named Jesus. I don’t know what color He is. He was born in brown Asia, He fled to black Africa, and He was in heaven before the gospel got to white Europe . . . I do know one thing: if you bow at the altar with color on your mind, and get up with color on your mind, go back again and keep going back until you no longer look at His color, but at his greatness and His power—His power to save![1]

Thankful

Picture
It will go down in history as perhaps mankind’s most bizarre year. Never has the entire globe in unison shut down because of a virus.  Restrictions in travel, work, recreation, size of gatherings etc., have ruined businesses, increased the number of suicides and deaths for those with other ailments who cannot be hospitalized, amped fear to unprecedented levels, and created a huge divide in opinion over what should or should not be done.  Meanwhile political unrest, rolling waves of violence, storms and disasters add to the cacophony of 2020.

Why (and How) Everything Matters

Picture
The word everything has two meanings: every single thing or total; all; and, something enormously important.  For this writing, both definitions apply.  I was quite taken by how powerfully this word weaves throughout Scripture.  From a number of passages beginning in Psalms, and camping primarily in the New Testament, I have constructed seven key premises that in turn give us a strong foundation as Christians with which to tackle any and all issues.  My desire is to specifically address the two major issues that dominate our society at this time:  politics and racism/prejudice.  By the sheer complexity and magnitude of this undertaking this devotional will require your patience and time to digest.

Genesis

Picture
Walt Henrichsen, a godly man now in heaven, once said, “For the Christian, the only reliable revelation of God is the Bible.”  Reading the Bible is a great adventure in the pursuit of wisdom.  And the first book, Genesis, is incredibly important.  If we study Genesis we learn amazing truths and this initial book helps explain the following 65 books.  Why is Genesis so important?

Oscar's Vision

Picture
Oscar and Queta
Oscar, in September of 2003, had a vision where he was on the beach in a messed up condition when someone approached him, took him to the ocean, and began to cleanse him with ocean water.  In the vision he stopped crying and felt an incredible peace.  He asked the person helping him, “Who are you?”  The person replied,  “I’m God.”  Oscar was a 3rd generation atheist on his mother’s side and 4th generation atheist on his father’s side.  His vision began a religious quest in which he sampled Buddhism, Jehovah’s Witnesses and other religions while maintaining his heavy lifestyle of partying and heavy alcohol consumption.

Regeneration

Recalescence is the sudden glowing which takes place in metal that is cooling.  It is caused by the liberation of the latent heat of transformation.  It is a hot word picture that imperfectly depicts what happens to us who are spiritually born in Christ.  The truth is, the Holy Spirit is constantly at work in our lives as we determine to worship God.  Accordingly, there will be not one sudden glowing, but continuous times when the brilliant light of God bursts from our lives as the dazzling display of divine transformation.  This is what we call regeneration!

Redemption

Caleb’s head sunk in agony.  On the splintered beams of a weathered deck stood the only life left that really mattered—his daughter.  And now she was to be sold into slavery—auctioned off like some four-legged beast of burden.
