Meditation Deuteronomy 29:10-12--You are standing today, all of you, before the Lord your God: the heads of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, all the men of Israel, your little ones, your wives, and the sojourner who is in your camp, from the one who chops your wood to the one who draws your water, so that you may enter into the sworn covenant of the Lord your God, which the Lord your God is making with you today . . . (English Standard Version) Many foreigners living in Egypt chose to leave with the Israelites when God miraculously freed them from Pharaoh’s power. Others perhaps joined them as they wandered for 40 years in the desert. Those sojourners who were poor chopped wood and carried water for the Israelites to make a living. And God took notice. Yahweh did not just make a covenant with the Jews. He made a covenant with everyone in their community, beginning with the influential tribal leaders and continuing to the lowest servants. Pay attention when the Bible mentions woodchoppers and water carriers, for there is a message within the message. The same God who included the woodchoppers and made them recipients of His promises still cares about the least, the hurting, the marginalized, and the poor. Jesus was not dispatched to the world with a particular assignment to absolve the sins of the wealthy, powerful, talented, or famous citizens. He carried the weight of the world’s sin on His crucified shoulders because He loved all people. Today, the Lord extends a sworn covenant to those who trust and follow Him. “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). So for all the woodchoppers eking out a living take heart. God’s promises apply to you, and if you trust Him, redemption comes with an everlasting seal and benefits out of this world.
