There are many followers of Jesus around the world who routinely hear the Holy Spirit speak through dreams. I recall an occasion when my dad received a clear word regarding sharing his faith with four specific men through a dream. I personally don’t ever remember hearing God speak through this means. Yet, I find myself many times wishing He would as I struggle to discern His will regarding certain decisions that need to be made.
“For decades, a well-documented phenomenon has been occurring in the Muslim world—men and women who, without knowledge of the gospel, or contact among Christians in their community, have experienced dreams and visions of Jesus Christ.”[1] This is happening in Nigeria, Indonesia, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia just to name a few nations where Jesus reveals that He is the Savior to those searching or even to those who are antagonists. Whether God warns, instructs, or reveals, dreams are a legitimate means of heaven speaking to earth. As the frequency of dreams increase, we would do well to note the prophet Joel’s word quoted by Peter in his sermon at Pentecost: “And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams” (Acts 2:16-18).
