9/25/2023 0 Comments Every GenerationFor over 400 years, the Israelites lived in Egypt—most of that time in bondage. They felt oppressed, abandoned by God, and in many ways helpless. It must have felt like their prayers were wasted thoughts. Many no doubt wondered if the stories passed down from their parents and grandparents about God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were true. How could they be when slavery prevented them from living freely as a nation in their land? But, the author of the oldest Psalm in the Bible had a different perspective.
Meditation Psalm 90:1—Lord, you have been our refuge in every generation. Moses recognized that God was their help in every generation from the time of Abraham to his lifetime. Psalm 90:1 makes a powerful statement. God has not left the planet. The state of the world does not render Him feeble. Yes, He still cares—about every generation. He is your refuge. He is my refuge. If we only trust Him. Suffering is the testbed of faith. It is the revealer of what we truly believe. Where and who we run to when chaos is the song of the masses determines our outcome. Ask David—he’s lying in a hospital in rehab. A bike accident shredded his healthy body years ago, but God is His refuge. Instead of wallowing in pity, he gives godly counsel to struggling people. Lloyd lost a limb. He doesn’t sit in his apartment and drink himself to sleep to cope. No, he proclaims Jesus to anyone who will listen with a smile, eliciting more power than solar panels. God is his refuge. Annie lost Mike, her wonderful husband. She didn’t give up on life. She graciously faced a tragedy and moved more profoundly in her love for her Savior. God is her refuge. Every generation leaves no one out. Every generation proclaims the irrefutable evidence that our Creator is committed to our wellbeing. So the question is not where is He but rather where are we? Are we unswerving in our faith? Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts. Lord—how long? Turn and have compassion on Your servants. Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days. Make us rejoice for as many days as You have humbled us, for as many years as we have seen adversity. Let Your work be seen by Your servants, and Your splendor by their children. (90:12-16).
