Remarkably brave women do not murder babies. They do what is morally right even if it means they could lose their own lives. God blessed the Hebrew midwives for fearing Him more than a corrupt pharaoh. He protected them and gave them their own families. This should be a strong encouragement to anyone whose faith is tested by evil.
Michael Youssef wrote, “When the government violates any provision of the Constitution, we have a constitutional right and a biblical responsibility to speak out against those abuses and even to disobey the civil authorities.”[1] The same holds true for any follower of Jesus in any nation where those in authority ask or demand compliance that violates God’s commands as are established in Scripture. The Bible cites numerous examples of people refusing to obey unjust directives:
Romans 13:1 teaches, “Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God.” When government does not contradict God’s will we are expected to obey. So we pay taxes. We render to Caesar what is Caesar’s (Matthew 22:21). We endure even what is burdensome and unpleasant. But, the moment we are asked to violate God’s moral law, we must resist for our character is at stake. Like the midwives, we don’t worry about the consequences. We focus on fearing God. He will bless us with relief, with protection or, should we be destroyed by wicked authorities, with eternal life. We bravely obey the ultimate authority for His glory.
