7/6/2001 EmancipatedOnce upon a time, fireworks were created by a loving Creator. But alas, the first two fireworks made were deceived by their Designer’s enemy into believing they could perform as equals to their Maker. Their rebelliousness tainted every succeeding generation of firework with a “My pop’s bigger than your pop!” mentality.
4/11/2000 0 Comments AssuranceSaturday night I was supposed to be at a banquet in Beaverton. Instead I found myself sitting on a broken plane in Denver. The United pilot informed us that a navigational piece of equipment on our jet was not inoperable. We waited for mechanics to fix the broken system and watched as the little red ball in the sky fell out of view. Finally, our good-humored pilot confessed that the job was more complicated than expected. While he could fly the plane to Oregon without the instrument’s help, he elected not to as a matter of safety. He needed the assurance that if anything should go wrong that system would work and warn us should the aircraft be too close to the ground. Because we knew we would be winging over large mountains we clapped our hands in agreement. Finally, almost four hours later, we took off on a different plane United provided.

Nehemiah 9:19-21--You did not abandon them in the wilderness because of Your great compassion. During the day the pillar of cloud never turned away from them, guiding them on their journey. And during the night the pillar of fire illuminated the way they should go. You sent Your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold Your manna from their mouths, and You gave them water for their thirst. You provided for them in the wilderness 40 years and they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell. 6/21/1999 0 Comments ReverenceReveration means reverent-adoration. It is a word I created after studying one of the most overlooked major themes of Scripture—the fear of God. If love for God is food than reverence for Him is water. We need both to nourish our relationship. Love devoid of respect is emotionally unstable causing people to perceive God as some sort of cosmic Genie. Respect without love is mechanically rigid such that people approach God from a sense of duty, concerned with failing, convinced that He is a harsh Judge.

Liberty lowered her torch and sat on her pedestal of stone weeping from the bitter blow his pride struck. She cried because he lied. She sobbed because he robbed—he stole the trust of a nation to enjoy forbidden pleasures. Tomorrow she will rise and light her torch. But it will not burn as bright. Around her base swirls water blackened with the slick oil of deceit. It’s mixture runs downstream leaching through soil at an alarming rate. Her children are poisoned by this hazardous waste of rationalization that dares to call evil good and good evil.

2/28/1998 0 Comments Word from GodHave you ever asked the question, "How do I know when God is speaking to me?" I remember vividly as if it were the very day, a choice I had to make over twelve years ago. The decision involved where I was to go in serving God with an organization called The Navigators. Some of my closest friends and counselors advised me to stay in the region where I had lived for the past four years. Other close friends and family advised me to leave and serve in a region to which I had been invited. It was a very difficult time because people's emotions were stirred and strong rational thoughts were presented by both sides. I chose to go for two reasons: 1. Throughout the process I had a persistent sense that God wanted me to go. 2. God confirmed His direction for me through a Bible passage in the book of Isaiah. Looking back, it is clear that going was the right decision.

Hebrews 3:6--But Christ was faithful as a Son over His household. And we are that household if we hold on to the courage and the confidence of our hope. 8/24/1997 0 Comments InfluenceMeditation
John 15:7--If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you. 3/7/1997 0 Comments AloneTo be alone can have two different meanings. It can signify the solitary state of life devoid of contact with anyone else. Or it can mean unique, being without equal.
There are times when we feel separated from all other people. The crush of humanity may press against our very flesh yet we feel emotionally or mentally isolated. It is as if we are tuned to a radio frequency no one else is receiving. In such times, depression can easily transcend from stranger to first-name basis. To be alone, to sense no one else understands or cares may choke the very joy out of living. 2/18/1997 0 Comments DeliveranceBefore going to sleep one night, Bryan asked his mom, about the seriousness of his brain-stem tumor. Through tears, he asked her, “Does this mean that I am going to die?” And so, we had the opportunity to share with our wonderful son the reality of death. He voiced the hope that Jesus would return before anything ever happened to his tumor. As best I could, I shared with him that even if his tumor were to grow, the reality is that he will be with Jesus and that is a wonderful thing to look forward to. Meanwhile, each day is a gift.
David Widerski, a pastor and friend, wrote as one of his resolutions before starting a new year, “To live each day as if it were my last.” 2/2/1997 CovenantMeditation
Psalms 119:50--This is my comfort in my affliction: Your promise has given me life. We live in an age of broken words. I once participated in a wedding for a man entering his third marriage to a woman who had never married before. I had the opportunity to share with this couple about a certainty that is infinitely greater than the likelihood that their marriage will last. It is the certainty that God has made an awesome promise to us. “ . . . Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household” (Acts 16:31). |
