7/6/1999 0 Comments DedicationThe eyes reveal the heart and what passion they contain. Ron sits in the open craft oblivious to all but the task ahead of him. He stares at the opaque surface so intensely one would swear he sees what others cannot. His hands thread the squirming brandling across the warm metallic hook like some splendid surgeon. With the expert toss of a quarterback he casts his line precisely to the spot he hoped and waits . . . and waits. If the worm won’t deliver, he daps or skitters with a fly he has meticulously crafted. He is unfazed by failure. His arsenal of tricks runs deep from years of careful learning. If patience is a virtue, Ron is the waiting virtuoso. Neither mosquitoes, rain, or hunger will keep him from his task. He is a fisherman. If you want to catch fish do as he does.

Malachi 2:1-2—“Therefore, this decree is for you priests: If you don’t listen, and if you don’t take it to heart to honor My name,” says Yahweh of Hosts, “I will send a curse among you, and I will curse your blessings. In fact, I have already begun to curse them because you are not taking it to heart.” 12/11/1998 0 Comments MortificationOf not of glorification innermost soul the but God cry is appeasement the self for the. Do these words make sense? Hardly—they contain only a convoluted truth because they are not pieced together properly. So it is with our lives when we give ourselves haphazardly to God. We display a message of devotion—but one filled with syntax errors which at best are minor, at worst, entertain the vast skepticisms of a doubting world and surely hurt the heart of our Father.

He was a senior and it was obvious that he had gained his coach’s respect. What was so remarkable about this young man? He never played a down in a game for the Army football team in his four years at West Point.

The leaves on my maple trees reveal the Creator’s paintbrush at work by their dazzling array of colors. The house in the morning is cold. The darkness outside combined with the comforter’s siren song make getting out of bed a challenge for the hardiest of souls.

Not only were we glad to see him safely returned, we also knew he would have a surprise for us. In my study today are many carvings, especially of elephants Dad brought home from different countries. They remind me of my father’s love.
7/2/1998 0 Comments DignityCraig is blind. I stare in utter amazement as he works the controls on his soundboard. How does he do it? How can this man be a recording engineer without the ability to read dials? Soon he ushers me into a recording chamber but trips momentarily on my guitar case placed inconveniently in his pathway. Sheepishly I realize that the biggest hazard to Craig is me!
6/11/1998 0 Comments Development--SpiritualDennis Rodman of the Chicago Bulls, is arguably the most controversial basketball player to ever lace up his shoes and play. Despite his reckless behavior off the court on the court he was one of the best rebounders of all time—few came close to hauling in as many rebounds per game as Dennis. This running tattoo-covered athlete pounced on loose basketballs like pumas pounce on their prey. His singular focus and drive to snare a bouncing ball propelled him to the top of his game on a team whose superstar, Michael Jordan, was the consummate example of dedication to being the best in the sport.

Colossians 4:2--Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving. I have neverencountered a mature Christian who is not strongly devoted to prayer. Certainly I know talented believers. There is a great abundance of disciples who are full of knowledge of the Bible and equipped with great people skills. I know many Christians who possess a solid business savvy and a knack for administrating. There is no shortage of believers who were raised in Christian homes and have faithfully attended church all their lives. But I have never encountered a mature Christian who is not devoted to prayer. 3/16/1998 0 Comments DevotionMeditation
2 Corinthians 6:3-10—We put no stumbling block in anyone's path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything. (NIV) 1/16/1998 0 Comments WorthIn the marketplace of life it is a tempting thing to measure our spiritual worth by the applause of people. But an apple can look good on the outside and be rotten in the middle. A watermelon can be huge and yet be devoid of sweetness.

Matthew 2:9,10--After hearing the king, they went on their way. And there it was—the star they had seen in the east! It led them until it came and stopped above the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed beyond measure. 9/13/1997 0 Comments BrokenMeditation
2 Corinthians 11:27-30—I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn? If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. (NIV) 6/4/1997 0 Comments WorkIs there anything mankind cannot accomplish? Pick up a newspaper and you are likely to find an advertisement for a seminar hosted by a professional motivator who will take your life to new dimensions with his or her “can’t lose” methods. Christianity is not immune from this phenomenon. The hot message today revolves around “You can do it—and we’ll show you how!” There is a subtle danger to this approach . . . The how or what takes priority over the who!
