John 13:34,35-- “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” The beauty of Christianity is found in the word if. We are not robots. We are not forced to love God or one another. Our Creator gives us clear commands, but it is up to us to follow them. Christianity is not about religion—a set of prescribed, agreed-upon beliefs, but rather a relationship. One can be fanatically religious yet have an apathetic view towards God and people. God desired that we love Him and one another, but it is up to us to fulfill His creating intent. Our DNA is fashioned with an if clause. We love Him because we choose to do so. We love people because we decide so. Find someone unloving towards God or people, and you discover a rebellious if. Loving God engenders loving people. One cannot love God and hate people. To be His adherent requires loving Him and one another. We are right to question whether someone truly loves God, knows Him, and feels no feelings toward others. That is an uncomplying spirit that turns off the world towards those who say they are Christians but display a self-centered bent. If is a gift. The Lord allows us to decide, and there are incredible consequences in that decision. A love applied if results in fruit here and reward in heaven. The application of our if reveals our values, motivation, attitude, and character. If only we would obey God, we would discover the absolute joy of fulfilling the will of an incredibly loving Father who fashioned us for an eternity of joy. Something to think about . . . in reveration. Inspiration “. . . if I obey Jesus Christ in the haphazard circumstance, they become pinholes through which I see the face of God, and when I stand face to face with God I will discover that through my obedience, thousands were blessed.”—Oswald Chambers in My Utmost for His Highest ©2023 Daniel York ARR.
