Listening When We Don't Want To

Picture
Mike and Robbie boarded the light rail on their way to a Seattle Mariners game. A few feet from their seats sat a dirty, smelly man suffering from an addiction, mental health challenge, or both. Mike was repulsed and cautious toward this man conversing with an imaginary person. Mike noted, “He rearranged his clothing and belongings continuously and removed and replaced a fake mustache.” Mike prayed that he would not attack them or be a problem.  The Holy Spirit had another plan.  He whispered in Mike’s ear that this was a man with a name, a man loved by Him, and that Mike should approach and talk to him.  But that was not something Mike wanted to do, and for most of the train ride, he resisted listening to persistent promptings.

Pray Like This: Your Name be Honored

Since 1958, the West Point Association of Graduates has presented the SYLVANUS THAYER AWARD to an outstanding citizen of the United States whose service and accomplishments in the national interest exemplify personal devotion to the ideals expressed in the West Point motto, “DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.”[1]

I Am Who I Am

Meditation
Exodus 3:13-15—Then Moses asked God, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them: The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ what should I tell them?”  God replied to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.  This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the Israelites: Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has sent me to you.  This is My name forever; this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.

Revealer

Curiosity is a powerful thing.  If you are in a group and happen to notice two people whispering to each other don’t you have an urge to know what they are saying?  We don’t typically like it when people keep from us secrets.  Nor do we appreciate it when those who are in charge withhold information we would like to know.  I remember the stress on Matt and Angie, our neighbors, when Nike was getting ready to lay off hundreds of employees. For weeks they were in suspense as to whether they would keep their jobs.  Fortunately they both did, but the stress of not knowing weighed heavily on them.

Agreement

Why did God scatter people across the globe and confuse their languages?  The Scriptural interpretation for an offended God is often based on a literal reading of Genesis 11:4, “And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky. Let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” But why would God be angry with people for plotting to fabricate some skyscraping tower? I don’t know any stupid architects. No one can build anything that reaches heaven.  Therefore, there had to be something about the purpose of the tower that drew God’s wrath. Marvin Rosenthal provides us analysis from his careful research.

Discussion

The angel, Gabriel, clearly told Zechariah that his wife Elizabeth would have a child and they were to call him “John” (Luke 1:13). Nine months later, elderly Elizabeth miraculously conceived this special baby and the neighbors and relatives gathered to celebrate his circumcision and to give him his name.   According to well-established custom they assumed he would take the name of his priestly father.

Good

In our culture it is common for people to exchange business cards.  Those tree-descended pieces tell others what we do, who we are and how we can be contacted.  The information had better be good if we hope to prosper.

Reputation

Across the table sat a man of large girth and hostile demeanor—one who formerly had served as his platoon sergeant.   This noncommissioned officer faced legal charges that if successful, would eject him from the army dishonorably.  He had been caught stealing equipment from his own soldiers, lying and shirking his duties. Now, less than a year later, enough charges had accumulated to bring him to trial.

Miracles

Meditation
Hebrews 2:1-4--We must, therefore, pay even more attention to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away. For if the message spoken through angels was legally binding and every transgression and disobedience received a just punishment, how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first spoken by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him. At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions of gifts from the Holy Spirit according to His will.
