Inspirational Quotations  S-U
Dear Reader,

For over two decades I have collected quotes from books and magazines I’ve read as well as from internet searches when researching certain topics or themes.  This collection is made to be added to as I continue to collect and by you also if you have quotes you would like us to add to this working compilation.  Simply add them as a comment and once approved we will join them to the collection.
Three disclaimers:  1.  Oswald Chambers is my all-time hero as a writer-speaker and therefore you will find that by far he is the most quoted author/speaker.  If you have never heard of him, I highly recommend My Utmost For His Highest.   2.  This collection is heavily tilted towards ministry—if you are in ministry and love speaking and writing you will get the most out of this.  Regardless, there is much for anyone.  3.  Do not assume quotations reflect my viewpoint. I’ve included a vast array of thoughts and opinions not because I agree with them but because they are thought-provoking.  The beauty of language is often found in the formatting and word selection!
Finally, this collection is offered free.  If you find it to be useful and you frequently hunt for quotes for speaking or writing here, please consider donating to First Cause which you can do right on this website.  Your gift helps us build better speakers and writers globally!    Enjoy!

Unprepared

To every man there comes in his lifetime that special moment when he is tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to him and fitted to his talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds him unprepared and unqualified for the work which would be his finest hour.—Winston Churchill

Spiritual Weakness

All its weaknesses and formalities and worldliness, the lack of holiness and of personal devotion to Christ and of enthusiasm for His cause and kingdom, are due to one thing—the Holy Spirit is not known and honored and yielded to as the one only, as the one all-sufficient source of a holy life.—Andrew Murray in The Two Covenants

Unchanging

The first question about leading into uncharted territory is not about change but about what will not change. First we determine what is precious, what is worth keeping no matter the circumstances, what will never change, what is the core ideology of the church.—Tod Bolsinger in Canoeing The Mountains, p. 128

Summary

There are several primary advantages to this process of summary. The first advantage is that I genuinely come to understand what the person is saying . . . The second advantage . . . is that it aids the person in consolidation and utility of memory . . . The third advantage . . . is the difficulty it poses to the careless construction of straw-man arguments. —Jordan B. Peterson in 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote To Chaos, pp. 246,247.

Say

“Say what you mean, so that you can find out what you mean. Act out what you say, so you can find out what happens. Then pay attention.”—Jordan B. Peterson in 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote To Chaos, p.282.

Sabotage

“Sabotage is natural. It’s normal . . . Saboteurs are usually doing nothing but unconsciously supporting the status quo. They are protecting the system and keeping it in place.”—Tod Bolsinger in Canoeing The Mountains, p. 174.

Seek

Are you tempted to meet a legitimate need in an illegitimate way . . . Are you tempted to test God by asking Him to serve you, rather than seeking to serve Him? . . . Are you tempted to seize control from God rather than waiting for His provision?--Bill Perkins in the Jesus experiment

Yes, it is true, if you seek the Lord and yet are unwilling to stop your sinning, you shall not find Him.  Why?  Because you are seeking Him in a place where He is not . . . But if you will take the trouble to seek God in your own heart, and if you sincerely forsake yours sins so that you may draw near to Him, you shall infallibly find Him.--Jeanne Guyon in Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ
