Inspirational Quotations  A-C
Dear Reader,

For over two decades I have collected quotes from books and magazines I’ve read as well as from internet searches when researching certain topics or themes.  This collection is made to be added to as I continue to collect and by you also if you have quotes you would like us to add to this working compilation.  Simply add them as a comment and once approved we will join them to the collection.
Three disclaimers:  1.  Oswald Chambers is my all-time hero as a writer-speaker and therefore you will find that by far he is the most quoted author/speaker.  If you have never heard of him, I highly recommend My Utmost For His Highest.   2.  This collection is heavily tilted towards ministry—if you are in ministry and love speaking and writing you will get the most out of this.  Regardless, there is much for anyone.  3.  Do not assume quotations reflect my viewpoint. I’ve included a vast array of thoughts and opinions not because I agree with them but because they are thought-provoking.  The beauty of language is often found in the formatting and word selection!
Finally, this collection is offered free.  If you find it to be useful and you frequently hunt for quotes for speaking or writing here, please consider donating to First Cause which you can do right on this website.  Your gift helps us build better speakers and writers globally!    Enjoy!

Coach/Coaching

A coach is someone trained and devoted to guiding others into increased competence, commitment, and confidence.—Frederick Hudson in Handbook of Coaching
You don’t need lots of techniques or years of experience to be an effective life coach.  What contributes to people most is your level of commitment to them. That commitment doesn’t come from technique or experience, It comes from the depth of your being.—Dave Ellis in Life Coaching

All good coaches believe a few essential truths, convictions for which they will fight.  Leaders with clear convictions find it easier to make decisions. Convictions increase confidence and improve decision-making ability.—Daniel Harkavy in Becoming a Coaching Leader

Coaches are both change agents and constants agents. They help people see what needs to change and what needs to remain constant and unchanging.—Richard J. Leider in The Power of Purpose

If you want to coach people through change, don’t rely on facts, fear or force.—Gary R. Collins in Christian Coaching

If your aren’t willing to be a leader, then don’t be a coach.—Gary R. Collins in Christian Coaching

If a coach does not help his or her clients develop a concrete plan and hold them accountable for it, he or she has failed them as a coach.  Plans may change over time, but the coach ensures that there is a plan and encourages the client to work toward it. Coaches hold clients to their plans.—Gary R. Collins in Christian Coaching

Great coaches are visionaries.  Great coaches instill, nurture, and encourage vision, then model and motivate surrender to it.—Thomas G. Bandy in Coaching Change

Good leaders regard every encounter as an opportunity to coach.—Larry Bossidy & Ram Charan in Execution

In our view, one of the most essential qualities of a coach, and something clients can count on in a Co-Active coaching relationship, is truthfulness.  A coach is someone who will absolutely tell the truth . . .—Henry Kimsey-House, Karen Kimsey-House, Phillip Sandahl and Laura Whitworth in Co-Active Coaching

Stated concisely, coaching is the art and practice of enabling individuals and groups to move from where they are to where they want to be.—Gary R. Collins in Christian Coaching

Coaching is helping people learn instead of teaching them.—Tony Stoltzfus in Leadership Coaching

Christian coaching is the art and practice of enabling individuals and groups to move from where they are to where God wants them to be.—Gary R. Collins in Christian Coaching

Counseling or therapy deals mostly with a person’s past and trauma and seeks healing. Consulting deals mostly with problems and seeks to provide information, expertise, advice strategies, and methodologies to solve them. Mentoring deals mostly with succession training and seeks to help someone do what the mentor does. Coaching deals mostly with a person’s present and seeks to guide him or her into a more desirable future.—Patrick Williams and Diane S. Menendez Institute for Life Coach Training

First, the coach must take the lead in building apartnership that will persist and keep the client engaged over time. Second, you need to be clear about the assumptionsthat you and your client bring to the relationship. This includes clarifying what coaching is and what it is not . . .Third, near the beginning it can be helpful to explore the issuesthat the client wants to discuss.  All of this will enable you to evaluate the client, including the pros and cons of working together.  Finally, at some time you will need to have an agreementabout how the coaching will take place. Together these five issues become the core of the coaching relationship.—Gary R. Collins in Christian Coaching

For coaching to succeed, God must be at the core.—Gary R. Collins in Christian Coaching

If you want to help your clients in the short-term, focus on solving problems. If you want to see them radically transformed for life, concentrate on building people.—Tony Stoltzfus in Leadership Coaching

Career coaching focuses on aligning a client’s passions, skills, and values with their work. In a lifetime we typically change careers ten times and 90 percent of American workers don’t like their jobs. Often this is because our jobs don’t tap into our core passions and strengths.—Keith Webb

Coaching is a discipline of helping people grow without telling them what to do.—Tony Stoltzfus in Leadership Coaching
