When I joined them, I saw her small memorial to Sebastian Dall (10/17/2002—10/30/2004). He was a sailor assigned to Kings Bay who was struck while driving his motorcycle and killed. We discovered that Janet did not know the young man. She heard about the accident, and realizing that he had no family here, wanted to do something in his honor. It was an amazing act of kindness from a woman whose eyes exuded love.
Stacy asked Janet if we could pray for and with her. She, too, loved the Lord and with tears in her eyes, said, “Yes, that would be wonderful.” So the three of us gathered in a small circle and, with arms on each shoulder, joined together as Stacy prayed. Moments before she was finished conversing with the Lord, a male voice shouted out, “There is no God!” All non-Christian world views are ultimately self-contradictory. For example, skepticism refutes itself because it is internally self-contradictory. If skepticism is true, it is false . . . Any statement which negates the only basis on which it can make its affirmation (or denial) is indirectly self-defeating.[1] Meditation 2 Chronicles 6:14--He said: Lord God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven or on earth, keeping His gracious covenant with Your servants who walk before You with their whole heart. I have no idea why a man felt the need to interrupt three people sharing a special moment, and neither Stacy nor I (Susan didn’t hear him) bothered to open our eyes to see who was so agitated with God. The fact that he felt so compelled to voice his opinion suggests he knows there is indeed a God, for if there is no God, why bother to shout it out? What I do know is this mysterious man missed two quintessential words—“like You.” The truth is, there is no God, like God. This unseen Creator brings strangers together at the side of a road to share a sacred moment. This loving Father gives us hope in the face of loss. This Promise-giver fills each day with life pregnant with joy. This Lover of humanity redeems the unredeemable. From my new prayer journal entry, I will be reminded weekly to ask the Author of Grace to reveal Himself to this vocal critic and transform his life from one of denial to one of faith. Probably the man who so forcefully denied God was either bitter against God or burdened with guilt, or both. May the poor man repent and believe!
