Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The modern field of artificial intelligence was born in the summer of 1956 at the Dartmouth Conference, where John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon gathered a small group of visionaries to investigate whether machines could be made to “use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve kinds of problems now reserved for humans, and improve themselves.”[1] This gathering marked the official launch of AI as an academic discipline.

Fraud

Charles Dawson, an amateur archaeologist and fossil collector, supposedly “discovered” in 1912 the remains in Sussex, England, of a half-man, half-ape called the “Piltdown Man.”[1] He claimed it was proof that Charles Darwin’s theory that mankind evolved from apes was true, and for more than forty years, this specimen played a key role in defending evolution. It was a key piece of evidence in the Scopes Trial in Tennessee in 1925, which resulted in evolution being taught in public schools throughout the U.S. This so-called evidence, when carefully examined by an evolution-oriented scientist in 1949, was discovered to be a primitive specimen that was really less than 10,000 years old, with a human skull, the jawbone of an orangutan, and teeth that were filed down, stained so as to look old, and impregnated with grains of sand to “imitate” fossilization. In 1953, the embarrassing hoax was finally revealed, but irreparable harm had been done to over two generations of students who had been taught lies about their origin.

There is no God

An older woman was bent over by the side of the road, working on a cross and flower arrangement on the corner of Colerain and Douglas Drive. Her black Toyota was parked on the grass just off the road, and Stacy thought it would be a good idea to see if she was okay. So I dropped her off and then executed a U-turn to park behind them.

Reframing

West Point classmate Paul Mango shared about an address delivered by the Israeli Prime Minister to a group of McKinsey partners. “Leadership is NOT about being on top; it’s about being out in front.” This observation reframed the audience’s perspective on leading. Paul went on to note:
This metaphor unlocks a leader’s thinking in that it absolves him of the burden of having either all the answers or having to always know more than his team. Instead, the leader “out in front” ensures his team has the resources, information, and support needed to develop breakthrough ideas with guidance and input from the leader. Giving the team the combination of resources and accountability energizes and liberates the team and leads to superior outcomes.

Believing Gained by Reading

Erwin introduced me to Rojan* an 80-year-old doctor born in Peru. We listened to him as he explained that there is no such thing as hell and that when he dies, he will simply decompose and return to the earth—body, spirit, and soul. There is no afterlife he said. Implied in his words were his belief that there is no God and no accountability for us in how we live. He was firm in his convictions and seemingly unconcerned of a finite life.

Why I Value Theology

One would think that with the uncertainties of life and certainty of death, people would be intrigued, perhaps even obsessed, with knowing if there is a Creator and, if He in fact, has a plan for His creation. It amazes me how many people I meet who seem uninterested in what happens to them when they die. Yet, this is THE MOST IMPORTANT question everyone should want to know the answer to because one second after death will be too late to decide. For this reason, among many, I value theology.

Baal

The Israelites were living in mountain hideouts, caves and strongholds to escape the Midianites, Amalekites and Qedemites who frequently attacked them (Judges 6:2,3). Before God would use a young man named Gideon to deliver Israel from these aggressive raiders, He needed to wrest the weakest house in the tribe of Manasseh from their allegiance to Baal. Gideon’s own father and family members were engaged in idol worship. So an angel of the LORD appeared to him and gave him a mission.

Why We Were Created

Sometimes to understand the present we have to examine the past. Purposeless people wander the earth and wonder what is the meaning of life? Fortunately for us, the Bible clearly defines why God created us. If we look to the past, King David prayed, “Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on earth belongs to You. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom, and You are exalted as head over all”(1 Chronicles 29:11). David recognized that everything belonged to God and that He was therefore exalted. The prophet Isaiah wrote “Bring My sons from far away, and My daughters from the ends of the earth—everyone called by My name and created for My glory. I have formed him; indeed, I have made him” (Isa. 43:6b,7). Isaiah tells us that we were created for God’s glory—this is our purpose.

How Do We Know Jesus Is God?

Stan* came over to my house. Earlier he sent me an email stating that he and his wife would not be attending our small group. But I wanted at least a chance to get to know him so I invited him over to chat. During the course of our conversation Stan said he and his wife were having a difficult time finding a church to attend in Colorado Springs because of theological differences. When I asked him what that meant Stan said that they did not believe Jesus was God. Therefore, church leaders were not comfortable putting them in a leadership position. He further elaborated that 95% of Christians mistakenly are taught and believe in Jesus’ deity. No wonder they were having trouble finding a church home!

Just a Carpenter

Meditation
Mark 6:2,3—When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom given to Him, and how are these miracles performed by His hands? Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren’t His sisters here with us?” So they were offended by Him.

Bernoulli's Spiral

Jacob Bernoulli was born in Basel, Switzerland. As a young man, he studied theology and entered the ministry. Later he studied mathematics and astronomy. Traveling throughout Europe from 1676 to 1682, Jacob learned about the latest discoveries in mathematics and the sciences.[1]First described by RenéDescartes, Bernoulli extensively investigated the logarithmic spiral. “This equiangular spiralor growth spiralis a special kind of spiral curve which often appears in nature.”[2] Jacob called it Spira mirabilis, “the marvelous spiral”.

Have you ever met a scientist who was an agnostic or atheist? Chances are high that such a person may have seemed intimidating when it came to sharing faith in God because in this person’s view, religion is essentially unverifiable superstition. Scientific naturalists who suppose “science is the paradigm of truth and rationality,” believe in scientism.*

Creation II

If someone offered you a house with no foundation would you take it? I suppose if you lived somewhere where no storms or catastrophes occurred that would be okay. But, since no place on earth is trouble-proof, it is exceedingly wise to build upon a strong foundation. Now imagine sharing that Jesus is the Savior with someone who has never heard the gospel. Jesus’ mission prophesied in Isaiah 42 was to fulfill God’s promise to rescue people, to be a light to open blind eyes. Jesus told His disciples in Mark 16:15 that the whole creation should hear the good news about Him. But too often this news only concerns Jesus coming to earth, living a sinless life and dying on the cross to save us. Left out is the incredible part of why He came in the first place. If we don’t understand the whole reason for Jesus coming we have a foundationless house! We need to take people back to the beginning . . .

Proof

Every Sunday evening, Dan and Doris Berg lead a Bible Study for a Hispanic family. It is an ongoing ministry of love. One evening, after logging 340 miles on the road with his job with Wickes, Dan borrowed Tom’s pick-up truck to help the family move to another location in Hillsboro. One of the nephews, Jacob, about twenty-one years of age, accompanied Dan as they transported furniture. Jacob shared with him his desire to get away from a hazardous lifestyle that involved gangs and all that goes with spending time with bad company. While Dan listened, he spoke of his need for God—something he had not told anyone else.

Author of Origins of Life, theoretical physicist Freeman J. Dyson says, “As we look out into the universe and identify the many accidents of physics and astronomy that have worked to our benefit, it almost seems as if the universe must in some sense have known that we were coming.” Hmm. It’s not the universe that knew we were coming!

Relevance

Relevance according to The American Heritage Dictionary means “Pertinence to the matter at hand.” It is the buzzword of evangelicals who fear that many Christians have become so isolated within their own social creeks that they have lost their connection to mainstream society and therefore the ability to share Christ. It is a noble concept when properly applied for it requires that one observe, listen and relate to what is important to another.
