The Apostle Paul wrote his protégé Timothy to encourage him but what makes his words so powerful is his own example. He faithfully paid close attention to his life and his teaching. Next to Jesus, the case could be made that he influenced Christianity worldwide through his leadership more than any other man. His epistles continue as vital roots of the worship, theology, and pastoral life in the Catholic and Protestant traditions of the West, and the Orthodox traditions of the East. What made Saint Paul such a strong leader was that he: I. Understood His Purpose. He took his lead from the Holy Spirit.[1] He knew he was called for ministry.[2] He faithfully proclaimed the Gospel to the Jews and to the Gentiles.[3] He raised up leaders which helped establish a vibrant worldwide church.[4]
II. Valued Teamwork. Paul knew and appreciated the significance of the body of Christ. He recognized the importance of spiritual gifting.[5] He didn’t try to work alone.[6] He preserved harmony and promoted unity.[7] III. Was a Holy Example.[8] Paul understood the place of God’s mercy in rescuing him.[9] He kept a clean conscience—Acts 24:16. He endured incredible adversity yet rose above his suffering always trusting God.[10] He strove hard to quench his flesh.[11] IV. Glorified God—1 Ti. 1:17 by living: Joyfully;[12]Sorrowfully;[13]Peacefully;[14]Thankfully;[15]Confidently by faith;[16] and Contentedly—Php. 4:12.
